10th November 2012
Double Tree Hotel, Manchester
I was really looking forward to this wedding as I knew that Lorraine & Stuart were seeking something a little more unconventional than what you would usually find. Although this was a only a half day wedding and time was tight, it gave me the opportunity to exercise my creativity and showcase my potential as an urban wedding photographer.
I met Lorraine & Stuart in Cyprus at Tamlyn and Robert’s wedding. Lorraine was the bridesmaid, and was so happy with the job I had done for Tamlyn, that she hired me out of all the Manchester reportage wedding photographers available, to photograph and capture the precious moments of their wedding.
Lorraine & Stuart liked the idea of urban wedding photography. This is a huge trend right now as it really creates new ideals for photographs and results in interesting pieces couples can showcase as artwork in their homes. My portfolio is filled with natural and romantic wedding photography but this kind of urban wedding photography excited me greatly as I was able to be more “artsy” and experimental.
I travelled to Manchester a bit early in the day to scout the area for interesting areas to use as backdrops and which would incorporate well with the urban themed wedding shoot. Luckily, just outside the hotel was an old warehouse on the canal. This made the perfect locale for what I had in mind to make the happy couple awe inspired by their photographs.
The ceremony was held at the Double Tree Hotel. It was a beautiful location on top of a multi-storey building in the middle of Manchester, perfect for wedding photography. The views were breath taking as you could see the entire city. This gave guests something to talk about and as they entered the venue. You could hear the oohs and aahs in response to the setting sun. It was like a fairy tale come true as the setting sun cast a beautiful beaming light which provided a gentle stream into the ceremonial space.
After the magical ceremony, the couple treated their guests to a typically English tea party which was absolutely lovely, albeit a little unusual for a wedding. There was tea and delicate cakes which enraptured ones’ sweet tooth. The magic was carried-over in the form of entertainment as well. The couple had hired a magician who floated from table to table doing card tricks amongst other fun and distracting activities while the couple disappeared for their wedding shoot.
I mentioned before that I was excited about the opportunity to experiment, and that I did. I did some long exposures and off camera flash which gave the stylish urban feel the couple was looking for. Lorraine & Stuart were naturals in-front of the camera; a very fun couple to shoot. I must take this opportunity to pat myself on the back as I proved that I am a great urban wedding photographer and that I have the skills necessary to be successful as a Manchester wedding photographer.
The fun and magic continued at the reception. Before I left, the beaming couple were to cut the cake. The cake was two excellent replicas of Daleks from Dr Who. Stuart was unable to cut the cake (or so he made it seem) so he pulled out his light sabre to aid his previous comical attempt.
Overall, I enjoyed every bit of time spent with Lorraine & Stuart. They were cool, stylish and really fun which made my job supremely easy. I would like to thank the newly-weds for allowing me the freedom to play around and experiment with their wedding photography. Some couples find it hard to give up total control, even in the hands of a professional, but Lorraine & Stuart were the epitome of what a photographer looks for in clients.
